Hose Company #1

North Arlington’s First Organized Fire Company

About Hose Company #1

Hendel Hose Company #1 (now known as Hose Company #1), the first organized fire company in North Arlington, traces its roots back to the North Arlington Club, founded in July 1909 as a social and political organization. As the club grew, its members recognized the community’s need for fire protection and, in 1910, successfully urged the Borough Council to pass ordinances establishing a fire department. On January 12th, 1911, the group formally reorganized as Hose Company #1, electing John Devine as the first fire chief. Alongside Devine, dedicated charter members such as Edward and Vincent O’Hara, George Becket, Daniel McCarthy, the Kohler brothers, Richard Smith, and others laid the foundation for what became Hendel Hose Company #1, marking the beginning of organized fire service in North Arlington. Today, Hose Company #1 stands at 21 members strong.
